Unbridled Humour
The Artist’s Narrative and Intention
In the wild reaches of Corolla, I sought to document the raw energy of the local horses. While this frame suggests a lighthearted selfie, it actually emerged from a fierce and aggressive confrontation. My goal was to isolate a single second where the chaos of the struggle transformed into something entirely different. By removing the color, I wanted the viewer to connect with the sheer, wide-eyed surprise of the moment. This piece invites you to see beyond the surface of a battle and find the unexpected grace in a comedic accident.
The Photographic Moment and Atmosphere
The afternoon was filled with the sound of hooves and the intensity of a territorial dispute. These two stallions were locked in a cycle of biting and rearing, moving with incredible speed across the sand. Just as one horse turned toward my position, the other moved into the background, creating a perfectly timed alignment. The resulting image frozen in time completely reframes their violent interaction into a shared, humorous glance.
Nikon Fieldcraft and Technical Execution
To freeze such rapid movement without any blur, I pushed the Nikon Z 8 to a high shutter speed of 1/3200s. I utilized the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S lens to maintain a safe distance while capturing intimate detail. The animal detection autofocus locked onto the leading horse's eye instantly, ensuring the wide-eyed expression remained sharp despite the erratic action.
This monochrome piece captures a fleeting moment of levity between two powerful wild horses on the North Carolina shore. The 30x20 scale ensures that every expressive detail and texture is rendered with commanding gallery-grade impact. Printed on Canson Baryta, the light gloss finish adds a timeless depth to this surprisingly comical encounter.
