The Artist’s Narrative and Intention

In the wild reaches of the outer banks, I often look for moments that transcend the raw energy of the herd. My intention with this piece was to find the quiet heart of the equine spirit through a simple, symmetrical gesture of affection. By focusing on the point where their foreheads meet, I wanted to strip away the environment and emphasize a universal language of trust and belonging. This exhibition work serves as a reminder that even in the most untamed places, there is a soft and enduring kindness. The Photographic Moment and Atmosphere

The afternoon air felt heavy with the scent of salt as these two magnificent creatures slowly approached each other. A sudden hush seemed to fall over the beach when they finally paused to rest their heads together in perfect unison. It was a fleeting, dreamlike instance of absolute harmony that felt entirely separate from the rest of the world. To capture this delicate bond from a respectful distance, I employed the Nikon Z 8 with the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S lens. The advanced animal tracking system locked onto their eyes instantly, allowing me to frame the precise moment their brows touched. Using an aperture of f/6.3 helped to melt away the background, ensuring all focus remained on the intimate textures and soulful gaze of the horses. The massive reach of the 800mm focal length was essential for compressing the scene while remaining an invisible observer.
